Following in his father’s footsteps

August 18, 2010

My husband has a crazy love of shoes. He’ll tell you he doesn’t, but trust me he does. He also loves to shop (yes, I’m a lucky woman), though mostly for shoes.

The other night we were out for a walk in a pedestrian mall. He was arguing that he doesn’t have a fetish for shoes. I insisted that he does. We happened by an athletic shop and by complete reflex he pointed out the shoes. Needless to say, I had a good laugh.

He comes by this honestly, his mother is also very fond of shoes. However, his love is not equal for all shoes, he prefers running shoes I have my own vices (ahem, Starbucks), but shoes are not one of them. I’ll wear the same pair of black shoes for years. I have one pair of black, one of brown and a single pair of runners. Oh and one pair of black heals just in case. Though I will admit, I like flip flops in all colours! Generally speaking though, shoes are not my thing.

So you can imagine my amusement to discover that my youngest, at just 18 months, is following in his father’s footsteps. He has a passion for all shoes as demonstrated in this photo taken over the weekend at a local mall. We were walking down the corridor and he, without any prompting, made his way on his own over to this window. He won’t wear the shoes we choose, he must select a pair himself and he adores trying on everyone else’s shoes.

All this to say, I may have discovered that there is a gene for shoe fetishes too!

This made me laugh, such a cute photo! …And yes, there is definitely a genetic element to shoe addiction. Both my husband and I are addicts (although, like yours, I don't think my husband would admit it), and both our girls are fetishists. I dread to think what's going to happen when they are teenagers – I think we are going to have to move house…

Ah, the wonders of genes. And of shopping and shoes! So sweet.

Ha, too cute!

I, like you, will wear the same old pair for years. I like shoes, but there always seems to be something more important for me to spend my money on. Like Starbucks! ;-)

Miss M has a pretty good love-on for shoes, too. It's kind of sad because she can only wear certain, extra-wide (and not always pretty) running shoes because of her braces. But now that she has recently learned how to tie shoes on her own, she gravitates to runners anyway!

Fun post and cute pic!

That is so funny!! I'm glad you finally outed him ;) Oh and that gene is STRONG. Both my kids have it!

How cute! My daughter loves shoes and both of her grandmothers are beyond willing to indulge my fashion diva. My mother-in-law had four sons, so I get her need to shower the pink on her two granddaughters. My mom? Well, I'm decidedly NOT a clothes horse, so I think she's grooming my daughter in her image. The result? An almost-three-year old who dressed herself yesterday in all stripes, simply because her undies were striped, so "evwyfing has to have stwipes."

My Guy is the same way with shoes. Me too. Oh, so is Little Miss.

Safe to say that it's in the genes. The three of us keep the shoe industry here pretty busy – our way of giving back to the community. I would be too embarrassed to admit just how many pairs we own but it's all in the name of economic stimulation that we do this. Riiiight.

Hope you're having a lovely time with your boys, Christine.

Love this! Anyone who's big into shoes is OKAY in my book! (Surprised?)

Let's hear it for shoe genes! Lovely post.

My daughter's going through the same phase. It was a lot worse than it is now. She'd cry and whine until I brought her a certain pair of shoes. Now, I have them all hiding in a closet and she only thinks about them when the closet door is open. If only it were all that easy.

My 22 month old is the same way. She loves to try on shoes– hers and everyone else's, too1

My kids don't want to put on a pair of shoes to save their lives–if they had their druthers, they'd run around like Huck Finn all day.

Having biological and adopted children, I've always been amazed at what is learned and what is in the genes. Shoe obsession gene? I'd totally believe it! Cute, cute picture!

So funny! I love shoes, although I hate spending the money on the good ones. I never really thought about it, but oldest seems to have picked up on it as well. I guess there is a genetic component to fetishes!

You could do much worse than a love of shoes, I say. Much worse.

Happy (shoe) shopping! ;)

Haha! We are the same way, I could care less about my shoes, I own a pair of sneakers, a pairs of boots, and a pair of flip-flops. My huuby on the other hand LOVES shoes, and clothes, and loves shopping for them. Now our 3 year old is just as much into clothing and shoes as he is. People will comment on it and say "aww, it's amazing how soon you can see the difference between boys and girls" and I'm like "she doesn't get that from me, thats all her dad!"

Flip flops? Me, too! They're comfy and versatile adn they make they for dressy occasions, too. What's not to love?

Fun post. Hope you're enjoying your vacation.

That is so cute!!! I personally love love love shoes!! If I had the budget for it I would have so many pairs in so many styles. My boys also seem to have taken up this shoe admiration. Shoe shopping with them is an interesting process, we have to look at and touch just about every pair before I can get them to agree to the ones we went to get.

That is adorable. And you know, this is the first time I'd really thought about it, but my husband also has kind of a thing for shoes. He owns just as many pair as I do, and his are all better made and more expensive. Hey! We're going to have to have a talk about this…

I'm also lucky in that Tim loves to shop. When we're both cranky, he suggests shopping! For him, he loves to buy workout clothes but I do notice that he comes home with new running shoes more often than necessary. And Luke? LOVES shoes too! The first thing he does in the morning is put on shoes – and not necessarily his own. And when my niece slept over last weekend he was thrilled to see a new pair of shoes laying around. Too cute!

My boy is the same way – he's been into shoes since he started wearing real ones at around 12 months. Sometimes he tells ME what shoes to wear!

Love it. Both my kids inherited the shoe gene from me (and my mother and her mother….).

I love shoes, as long as they are comfortable. I love looking at 5 inch zebra print stilettos, but my feet would strike if I ever tried to wear them!

My daughter is in love with shoes- like her mother. My son and I…not so much.

I have a serious issue when it comes to shoes. It's shameful how many shoes I have and how many I still buy. Now that my daughter is crawling, they're the first things in the room she goes for!

Isn't it funny how traits like that can be passed on?

And yes, I have a love for shoes. I don't buy them nearly as often since having my son. Can you imagine chasing after a boy in 3 inch heels? But I've been assured that once he gets older, I'll be back in those shoes. Here's hoping.

I'm with you…I have the same comfy shoes in black and brown, and they are all I wear. Except for Summer when I wear flip flops and nothing else.
I wish J liked to shop – you are lucky!

My husband also has a shoe thing going on, but he doesn't even try to hide it anymore. After 15 years I think he is rubbing off on me. I have more than one pair of tennis shoes now!
